Rare Burr Satin-Birch Bureau with Pewter Inlay Poss. Coxed & Woster c.1720

Rare Burr Satin-Birch Bureau with Pewter Inlay Poss. Coxed & Woster c.1720

A rare and highly unusual Burr Satin-Birch Veneered Bureau Bookcase c.1720 with ebony banding and inlaid pewter detailing. Possibly by Coxed & Woster.

The upper section has a moulded and ebonised top with a pair of bevelled mirror panel doors edged which enclose adjustable shelves. The bureau is in two sections: the top section has a sloped ā€œfall frontā€ with opening book ledge, when open it sits on slide-out side lopers above a double drawer facade. The interior holds a number of pigeon holes, drawers, a tooled leather insert and a sliding lid accessing a stationary well below which is inlaid with an ebony diamond. The inside also holds a number of secret compartments (some which may not yet have been found) designed to hide away your treasures The base section is comprised of three long drawers divided by ebonised moulding and raised on bun feet.

This fantastic piece of furniture would equally be at home in a contemporary, antique interior or gallery space as it is a work of art in its own right. A historical 18th Century piece that, amazingly, feels equally modern with its’ clean lines, wonderful proportions and elegant style.
